Know Your Rights
You have constitutional rights:
  1. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR if an immigration agent is knocking on the door. Always ask who is at the door before opening it, and do not allow children to open the door.
  2. BEWARE that ICE agents use tricks to get people to interact with them. They often pretend to be police and say they want to talk to you about identity theft or an investigation, or shout your name to see if you turn around so they can confirm your identity.
  3. DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS from an immigration agent if they try to talk to you. You have the right to remain silent. You can simply state that you do not answer questions.
  4. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING without first speaking to a lawyer. You have the right to speak with a lawyer.
  5. DO NOT run or resist arrest.
  6. DO NOT give the agents any foreign documents like a passport or consular ID.
  7. ALWAYS ask for a warrant if law enforcement asks you to open the door to your home. Do not open the door to receive any documents. Ask agents to slide them under the door or show them to you through a window.
  8. If you are outside of your home, ask the agent if you are free to leave and if they say yes, leave calmly.
  9. DO NOT lie or provide false documents, including false ID cards.
  10. PRINT the Know Your Rights Card. If you are inside of your home, show the card through the window, slide it under the door, or you can say:
I do not wish to speak with you, answer your questions, or sign or hand you any documents based on my 5th Amendment rights under the United States Constitution. I do not give you permission to enter my home based on my 4th Amendment rights under the United States Constitution unless you have a warrant to enter, signed by a judge or magistrate with my name on it that you slide under the door. I do not give you permission to search any of my belongings based on my 4th Amendment rights. I choose to exercise my constitutional rights.
